Fun Run with K9 Family day in The East Cobb Park

Atlanta people who have just recovered from an unexpected heavy snowfall were surprised to know that the sunshine in the winter still remains and the blue sky are still there. Frosty trees who survive the snow has grown more tender and gorgeous, some as red as fire, and some as transparent as butter.

This weekend (12/16/2017), Atlanta Chinese Life (ACL) invited Cobb County Police Department K-9 unit Lt. Maddox, Police Dog Aries and officer Rickerson to The East Cobb Park for a memorable time with local Chinese residents.

Today’s protagonist is Aries, a German shepherd, under the active search and rescue unit. It’s called K-9 in the United States, taken from homophonic word “Canine” which means dog.

Aries is a tall and majestic beautiful dog with dense fur and swift, precise action. Because of its meritorious service in the First and Second World War, K-9 was a prominent police force in the United States and naturally a patron saint of the people. One of the purposes of this event is to raise donations to add new members to this unit of Cobb County.

The arrival of K-9 makes our children very exciting. They surrounded the shepherd’s dogs, a little scared but also eager to get in touch with Aries.

Regrettably, some of the children did not make it to the scene. However, they use their pens to depict K-9’s look. From these naive, rustic strokes, only one word is read: love.

At the scene, our eight-year-old Chinese girl Fiona Qi talked about her views on police dogs. She started form the origins of police dogs, training, function, and also talked about the brilliant record of police dogs. She encouraged all people at present that unity, cooperation will help us build a harmonious and beautiful society. Inspector Lt. Maddox was very surprised and touched. The child’s clear voice spread to every corner of the park. Her innocent eyes reveal the love and trust of the police and police dog. After the speech was completed, Lt. Maddox took a photo of the girl and curiously asked Where do you learn this professional knowledge? I have to invite you to the police station to give us a lecture!

Mr. Jaspen, 80 years old, is learning Chinese. Mr. Jaspen also decided to share his own understanding of the relationship between police and the public. Old gentleman speaks with his not yet fluent Chinese, jokingly asked, Have you ever received a speeding ticket? I did! But we must always remember that the police are our friends, the police catch bad guys. We are always on the same side!

This weekend, nearly a hundred local residence from Chinese community stood in the warm sunshine with American police, bathed in breeze, drinking tea and chatting like old friends. What are they talking about? Not crime, not complain, just like chatting with your friends and neighbors. We are all ordinary people this weekend, with ordinary people’s happiness and worry.

Sunshine, leaves, dancing, running dogs and laughter children, this enchanting scene, of course, is not all of life.

The United States is an immigrant country. Cultural integration and cultural conflicts have never stopped. As the U.S. international counter-terrorism mission becomes increasingly important, the introduction of Trump’s new immigration policy has created waves in social conflicts which had put police in an ambivalent situation. We still remember on July 7, 2016 National protests sparked by police shooting black men in Minnesota.

In most people’s minds, the image of the U.S. police is the word “tough.” Leather boots, electric rods. It seems appropriate to use the word “vicious”.

But do not forget, it is them who maintain the normal functioning of social life. They face the most sinister aspects of society, and they are at risk all the time. They are not “King of Coronas,” and like us, they are fleshly bodies, taking off their uniforms, that is, mortals who are neither terrible nor violent. Most of them are still young, and their lives are full of confusion, helplessness and fear.

Of course, they also make mistakes. In my humble opinion, most mistakes come from misunderstanding, especially the lack of communication. Remember the old movie “Gua Sha”? Chinese mom used traditional Chinese medicine to scrape his son’s back and leave a streak of bloodstains. As a result, the mother was arrested by the police for “child abuse” crime, almost lost custody of his son.

The misunderstanding of the police is particularly serious. The accumulated grievances of the community will be released to the police. As at that event on 7 July 2016, three police officers were attacked in different locations during a rally in Georgia, Tennessee and Missouri.

In 2014, Liu Wenjian, a Chinese policeman who was shot dead in the streets of New York City, left behind a distraught wife and a childless father. Mrs. Liu’s wife appealed to the public with the language of her heart and asked the public to treat the police with more understanding and less prejudice. Just in December 2017, to commemorate the death of Liu police officer, New York Police Department recently graduated police dog was named “Liu Liu.”

As an unknown motto says “Real understanding begins with effective communication.” A cup of tea, an untitled chat will help the police know you, make them know that Chinese are not all have kongfu. And you also learn that police also need to support their families and they have fears too. They are law enforcement officials, but they also have the advantages and disadvantages as ordinary people.

Beginning is extremely important. Only by starting of the communication we can have understanding and friendship. There will be a beautiful and ideal relationship between the police and the community as the 8 years old Fiona’s described.

This weekend’s party perfectly ended with a pleasant run and dance, and for this we thank K-9 Aries, his officer Rickerson, and K-9 unit Lt. Maddox. To express our appreciations, the community presented small boxes of Christmas gifts to them. Inside of which are a model of China’s Terracotta Warriors dated back to two thousand years ago, and local Chinese restaurant gift cards. The police are also the soldiers in a way guarding the country today.

It always needs the understanding and communication between the various groups and the police in American society. Now it is time for Chinese in Atlanta to step forward and set an example for the other communities. We need to open our arms and welcome police friends into the Chinese community. We need more parties, more tea, coffee and chat, just like “Running with K-9” hosted by Atlanta Chinese life.

Now let me suggest that in the coming Christmas, when our family reunites, do not forget the policeman and K-9 who are still on duty around you. Please go to the nearest police station and give them a small box of thank-you cookies for the hard working this year.

Note: The Fun Run with K9 in The East Cobb Park held on 12/16/2017 is one of the K9 fund-raising events organized by Mr. Chao Li from Atlanta Chinese Life, a mobile social networking with more than 40,000 local Chinese-spoken residents. Mr. Li started this fund-raising event on GoFundMe website (https://www.gofundme.com/cobbpdk9) with a goal of $12,000 two months ago, which is the typical money amount to buy a new K9.

And he had raised $8144 the day before Fun Run with K9 event. After Atlanta Chinese Life published the event report through its own WeChat, a popular Chinese instant messenger social media, the whole local Chinese community was touched and raised more than $4000 in a short 3-day period. As of today (12/120/2018), the goal of this GoFundMe campaign has been successfully reached with the total of $12,221 before Mr. Li ended the acceptance of donations.
